Doing Our part

As Scouts, we have promised to do our best to make the world a better place. One way we can do this is through practicing conservation. Wildlife conservation is the preservation and protection of animals, plants, and their environments. Another facet of conservation is conserving resources. Important resources such as land, water, and food are often taken for granted and are used to an excess amount. But its important to remember we share this planet with many different weird and wonderful creatures. When humans participate in practices that damage the environment such as deforestation or overfishing, the impact is larger than we are able to see. Luckily, we have the ability to get involved and protect local wildlife, as well as their habitats.

Apply your knowledge

  • How might an invasive species harm an environment if they outcompete a native species for a niche?
  • How could the loss of a certain trophic level (such as decomposers or primary herbivores) harm the rest of an ecosystem?
  • What are some ways we can ensure our safety and the animal's safety when encountering wildlife?
  • What practices could you implement at home to lessen the waste you produce, as well as ensure it doesn't end up in our waterways?
  • What are some ways you can bring conservation practices to your community?
